Nephrology and Hypertension Division

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension includes 24 nephrologists, 9 fellows-in-training, and 11 advanced practitioners. The Division offers a robust education and clinical research program. Division members conduct original research, participate in nationally funded trials and conduct pharmacy-based research.

Clinical care

Our staff specializes in the treatment of complicated hypertensive disorders, complex chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases at all CKD stages as well as diabetic kidney disease kidney stones, resistant hypertension, and electrolyte and acid-base disorders. Our CKD clinics are equipped to apply newer techniques to help slow the progression of chronic kidney disease to prevent progression to end-stage renal disease. The Division manages kidney and pancreas transplant recipients, with approximately 120 kidney-only transplants annually as well as kidney-pancreas transplants.

Outpatient dialysis

The Division provides state-of-the-art in-center hemodialysis, home hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis for over 1,000 patients at multiple, in-center dialysis units. Each unit prides itself in caring for the patient as a whole, providing an array of ancillary services, including physical and occupational therapies, dietary guidance, and spiritual support. Surgical care for vascular access is co-jointly provided by our partners in the Division of Vascular Surgery at Henry Ford.

Kidney transplantation

Transplantation evaluation and follow-up is encouraged within the same health care system for superior continuity and coordination of care. The kidney transplant program, among the nation’s oldest and part of Henry Ford Transplant, has an excellent reputation and is equipped to deal with patients with special needs.

Inpatient services

Our Division provides four active consultation services, one for a wide variety of kidney, hypertension, and electrolyte problems in patients hospitalized on other services and the last for the inpatient kidney transplantation service which admits patients newly transplanted as well as those requiring inpatient care. In addition, we staff two inpatient nephrology services dedicated to the care of hospitalized patients with problems such as acute kidney injury or end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis.

Education

We offer medical students, residents, and nephrology fellows clinical and research experience. Our two-year Fellowship Program also includes candidates in a 3-year integrated Nephrology and Critical Care Medicine track and also candidates committed to one or more years in the Nephrology and Hypertension basic science laboratories.

Research

Clinical research focuses on peritoneal and hemodialysis, and basic renal research focuses on the mechanisms responsible for kidney diseases requiring renal replacement therapy. Our Division is also closely associated with the Hypertension and Vascular Research Laboratories, one of the longest NIH-funded laboratories of its type in the country.
