Antimicrobial Stewardship Program
The mission of the Henry Ford Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) is to enhance patient outcomes by optimizing antimicrobial therapy and advancing the education of healthcare providers in evidence based diagnostic testing and antimicrobial utilization. The goals of the ASP are to improve patient safety and outcomes and elevate the quality and efficiency of care through optimal antibiotic use.
The Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) at Henry Ford Health System is led by Dr. Geehan Suleyman, MD, MLS (ASCP), FIDSA, FSHEA, System Medical Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention and Control, in close collaboration with pharmacy specialist Rachel Kenney, PharmD, BCIDP. Each hospital site is supported by local ASP leadership, consisting of both a physician and an Infectious Diseases–trained pharmacist.
We work closely with microbiology laboratory leadership, Infection Prevention and Control colleagues, and Infectious Diseases physicians. Our Ambulatory Stewardship Committee leads outpatient prescribing efforts and reports through the monthly, multidisciplinary, physician led System Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee. The ASP is also actively engaged in clinical research, supporting our academic mission.
In addition, we participate in the Hospital Medical Safety Consortium at the state level and report stewardship data to the National Healthcare Safety Network for national benchmarking, while also contributing to numerous local, state, national, and international initiatives.
Our flagship hospital, Henry Ford Hospital, has been recognized with the Infectious Diseases Society of America Center of Excellence award.
