Adnan Munkarah, M.D., is the President, Clinical Enterprise & Chief Physician Executive at Henry Ford Health in Michigan. In this role he oversees both the clinical and operational sides of Henry Ford Health, including hospitals, ambulatory and service lines – driving growth and clinical excellence, championing quality and safety, enabling new level s of innovation and research, and forging strong partnerships with physician groups and other healthcare team.

Henry Ford Health is one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, recognized for clinical excellence in cancer care, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics and sports medicine, and multi-organ transplants. Consistently ranked among the top five NIH-funded institutions in Michigan, Henry Ford Health engages in more than 2,000 research projects annually and has achieved over $120 million dollars in total annual research funding in the past two years. Equally committed to educating the next generation of health professionals, Henry Ford Health trains more than 4,000 medical students, residents and fellows every year across 50+ accredited programs.

Adnan has over 20 years of experience in leading health care delivery in large organizations. In his current role, he has overseen a significant growth (>15% over 3 years) in clinical volumes and revenues of over a billion dollars clinical enterprise. He has restructured the cancer service line and led the launch of cardiovascular and orthopedics service lines; both cancer and cardiovascular service lines experiencing 5-15% growth over past two years. Under his leadership, the quality metrics improved year after year, driving down hospital acquired infections across all 5 system hospitals, as well as leading to high Medicare Advantage CMS start rating in the ambulatory setting. In an era when healthcare is moving from fee for service to value-based models, he reorganized the care model aligning primary care and population health services (including care management and analytics) driving improved patients’ outcomes and improved financial savings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Adnan was one of the executive leaders guiding and overseeing the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and deployment strategies to ensure optimal patient care as well as a safe work environment for the staff. Realizing the critical need to redesign the alignment of the academic mission with healthcare delivery and improvement, Adnan was one of the main leads in engineering the 30-year partnership between Henry Ford Health and Michigan State University, an agreement that is viewed as futuristic and transformational by local, regional and national stakeholders and observers.

Prior to joining Henry Ford Health, Adnan held senior leadership positions with Wayne State University/Karmanos Cancer Center in Michigan, and King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center. He served as division medical director and multidisciplinary specialty lead for gynecologic oncology where he expanded the clinical services by 40%, establishing the largest clinical gynecologic oncology service in the state caring for cancer patients in multiple health care systems. He also started a clinical fellowship training program in gynecologic oncology to help train the future providers and leaders in the field. At King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, one of the largest academic medical centers in the Middle east, Adnan had the chance to lead the transformation of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, working with staff and physicians from around the world, reorganizing clinical services, focusing on clinical outcomes and patients experience and driving a team culture centered around the patients. He also worked closely with partners in the pharma industry to educate and spread the use of novel therapeutics including HPV vaccination.

Adnan currently serves on the Board of Directors for Health Alliance Plan (HAP), a provider sponsored health insurance plan. He also chairs HAP board quality committee. He is a director on the American Medical Group Association. He also serves on the Board of Haven, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that promotes programs to provide violence-free homes and communities and helps victims of domestic violence. He has served as chair for the Board of Governors of the Henry Ford Medical Group (one of the largest multispecialty physicians’ groups in the nation).

In 2022, Adnan was awarded the Excellence in Healthcare Award from the Arab American and Chaldean Council as well as the Academic and Community Leadership Award from the National Arab American Medical Association. He has been on Detroit Hour Top Doctors list for 14 consecutive years. His leadership during the COVID pandemic has earned him the recognition as one of Crain’s 2021 Michigan Healthcare Heroes. He has been awarded the APGO excellence in teaching award by the Association of the Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and was recognized by the Lebanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology for outstanding contribution and international achievement.

Adnan earned his MD degree from the American University of Beirut. He successfully completed his clinical training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne State University and in gynecologic oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He is also certified as physician executive by the American Association of Physician Leadership.
