Getting a good night sleep is crucial to your mental and physical health. We all have the occasional tossing and turning type of night, but if that becomes the majority of your schedule then your day time mood could suffer. 

Getting seven or more hours of quality sleep is needed for most adults in order to really benefit. When we get enough quality sleep on a regular basis it helps us stay less stressed, keeps us in a good mood, and helps us think more clearly. 

Sleep hygiene

What does sleep hygiene mean? The Sleep Foundation explains it this way, “Strong sleep hygiene means having both a bedroom environment and daily routines that promote consistent, uninterrupted sleep. Keeping a stable sleep schedule, making your bedroom comfortable and free of disruptions, following a relaxing pre-bed routine, and building healthy habits during the day can all contribute to ideal sleep hygiene.” 

There are a lot of ways you can develop a sleep routine that fits your schedule and your style.

Try This

  • Reduce screen light - eliminate using your cell phone, tablet, or tv in your bedroom. 
  • Have a set time to wake up in the morning - this helps create a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Avoid excessive naps during the day
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Start your routine 30 minutes before you plan to sleep - this gives you time to wind down from your day and get ready to sleep.
  • Remember to make these adjustments gradually so you can get used to them.
