Advanced Anti-Seizure Therapies

People with more than one seizure a year with a change in level of consciousness have decreased quality of life and even decreased life expectancy. Therefore, epileptologists remain proactive in trying to make patients seizure-free. At Henry Ford, patients have access to research trials of new medications that may not be available at many other centers. For patients who are not free of seizures that affect their level of consciousness, multiple modalities are used to try to localize the area of the brain causing seizures or critically involved in their maintenance and determine how safe it is to resect that area.

Such tests include: video EEG, magnetoencephalography, 3T MRI, PET, neuropsychology studies, Wada testing, and implantation of intracranial electrodes.

New Anti-Seizure Medications

The Henry Ford Epilepsy Center holds a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Master Contract for the newest anti-seizure medication trials and participates in ongoing pharmaceutical drug trials for experimental medical therapies.
