Resident Didactics

Didactic sessions are held weekly on Friday mornings from 7am-11am. Each month is dedicated to broad learning topics, beginning with Trauma in the first two months and then moving onto other topics such as Dentoalveolar, Implants, and Head & Neck Oncology.

These four-hour sessions provide a compilation of faculty and resident lectures, case discussions, and, new this year, implementation of the SCORE curriculum.

Morning Report

Assigned residents provide either a review of a recent clinical case or deliver a didactic learning session that correlates to the OMFS topic of the month.

The PGY-1 resident is specifically assigned clinical case presentations to emphasize the formulation of differential diagnosis and appropriate evaluation and subsequent patient management.

Oral Pathology Lecture Series

Dr. Brent Accurso and Dr. Brent Martin, both Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Pathologists, provide the Oral Pathology curriculum for the program. The first six months of the year provide the resident with the basics of surgical pathology/oral & maxillofacial surgical pathology. The second half of the year focuses mainly on clinicopathologic case conferences with some sessions incorporating a literature review, as needed.

SurgicalCORE

The program utilizes the SCORE platform as an educational resource. Residents typically play rounds of jeopardy as a group to maximize their learning on different modules.

Ancillary Lectures

Throughout the year, lectures cover topics such as resident research, ethics and professionalism, risk management, and patient management.

Monthly Tuesday Implant Conference

This one-hour conference is held monthly during resident didactics. The format of this resident learning session varies between lectures, case review, treatment planning (including M&M on completed cases), and clinical manikin exercises. The format allows oral surgery residents to present cases, deliver surgical technique lectures, and participate in discussions regarding implant topics and clinical scenarios. Residents participate in case-based learning during treatment planning seminars and receive additional hands-on experience in impression taking and provisional fabrication. The goal is to emphasize the team's multidisciplinary approach to restorative-driven implants.

Journal Club

Held bi-monthly, Journal Club provides residents with opportunities to review and critique current medical literature and initiate discussions among those present. The ultimate goal of this learning session is to improve patient care by incorporating evidence into practice.

Guest Speakers

Leaders in the field of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery lecture either in person or virtually. The goal is to disseminate the most up-to-date techniques in the specialty and provide increased medical knowledge to the residents.

Head & Neck Tumor Boards

Four times monthly, the residents attend Head & Neck Tumor Boards at both Henry Ford Warren Hospital and Henry Ford St. John Hospital.
