Head and Neck Cancer Focused Speech Language Pathology Clinical Fellowship
Overview
The Henry Ford Health Cancer Institute is offering a Head and Neck Cancer Fellowship in Speech Language Pathology for the 2024-2025 calendar year. The fellowship runs from June 1, 2024-May 31, 2025. This fellowship offers a unique and intensive learning experience. The Fellow will have on site supervision by Speech-Language Pathologists with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of varied head and neck cancers, speech, swallowing, and voice disorders in adults. The primary focus for the fellowship is adult outpatient clinical care and acute hospital care with the following learning objectives.
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative education, counseling, and care for patients with head and neck cancer
- Assess, size, and change tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) prostheses
- Administer and interpret instrumental swallow studies (MBSS, FEES)
- Provide post-objective swallow study counseling and recommendations
- Provide proactive swallowing therapy to patients receiving radiation +/- chemotherapy
- Instruct patients in tracheostomy care, airway health, and speaking valve assessment and implementation
- Evaluate and treat trismus post-surgery, and/ or chemoradiation
- Participate in weekly Head and Neck Tumor Board discussions
- Collaborate with otolaryngology, surgery, radiation, radiation oncology, medical oncology, nursing, social work, and nutrition specialists

Henry Ford Cancer Institute invites those completing a Masters in Speech-Language Pathology with an interest in head and neck cancer to apply for this opportunity. Graduate internship experience in head and neck cancer is preferred.
Information regarding application includes:
- All applicants must have completed academic coursework and clinical practicum in accordance with ASHA guidelines.
- All applicants must be eligible for a conditional license from the Michigan Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
- Applications are accepted until the first Friday in March.
- Final selection is based on a formal interview.
