What I love about Henry Ford Health: I think Henry Ford is in a diverse community that we embrace, consequently I can’t think of any other place that will give a resident a more well-rounded training or experience. When you finish you are prepared for anything and everything. I’ve been here 36 years which speaks to the fact that I feel blessed and privileged to work with such an amazing group. My outside interests include cooking, hiking and traveling.

Also, a consistent drive to get better in every way, and including everyone’s input in doing so. Last, but not least, a department-wide culture of not only accepting but embracing diversity in all of its forms.

What I love about Henry Ford Health: I have immense respect for the gifted community of physicians, researchers, caregivers, and all involved at Henry Ford Health. What truly sets our Henry Ford Dermatology department apart is an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, a dedication that predates current trends combined with a brilliant, caring team. Our focus has always been on the individual, ensuring every patient receives the best care possible. With a history rooted deeply in Detroit since the 1950s, we've made it our mission to serve and uplift underrepresented and underprivileged communities.
Dr. Henry W. Lim is the former Clarence S. Livingood chair and chairman of the Department of Dermatology (1997-2017), Henry Ford Health, Detroit, Michigan, USA. He received his M.D. (cum laude) from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn, New York, USA, and completed his dermatology residency at New York University School of Medicine.
Dr. Lim has served as president of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), American Board of Dermatology, American Dermatological Association, American Society for Photobiology, and International Union of Photobiology. In 2023, he was elected as president of the International League of Dermatological Societies, which consists of over 200 international societies as members, representing over 200.000 dermatologists. He has received 14 presidential citations from the AAD, and in 2020, he was awarded an Honorary Membership of the AAD. He has been recognized with the Fred W. Whitehouse, MD, Distinguish Career Award of the Henry Ford Medical Group, European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology International Scientific Achievement Award, Finsen Medal from the International Union of Photobiology, and Alumni Achievement Award for Distinguished Service to American Medicine, College of Medicine, SUNY Downstate. Dr. Lim is honorary member of the following international dermatological societies: Austria, France, the Philippines, China, the Baltics, Spain, Taiwan, Peru and CILAD.
He has published more than 570 articles and edited 11 textbooks (over 31800 citations in Google Scholar with an h-index of 90). Based on publications from 2013-2023, expertscape.com cited Dr. Lim as the world top-rated expert on sunscreens (https://expertscape.com/ex/sunscreens) and photosensitivity disorders (https://expertscape.com/ex/photosensitivity+disorders). He was listed as a top 20 authors in dermatology from 2010-2019 with more than 2,500 citations (Szeto, MD, et al, J Am Acad Dermatol Dec 2021; 85:1573-1579), and as 2022 Newsweek Top 50 best medical dermatologists in the US (https://www.newsweek.com/rankings/americas-best-medical-dermatologists-2022.

What I love about Henry Ford Health: I trained at Henry Ford health System Department of Dermatology and was also Chief Resident of my graduating class. I enjoy the diversity of both the patients and staff. The achievement of healthy hair and skin are two of my passions, and I enjoy being a part of our Multicultural Dermatology Center.

What I love about Henry Ford Health: After completing my training in dermatology and pediatric dermatology at Henry Ford Health (HFH), I knew I wanted to stay here—and not just because I grew up in the area. At HFH, I have the privilege of caring for wonderful patients with all ranges of skin colors and a wide variety of skin diseases. Along with my amazing colleagues, I'm part of multidisciplinary clinics, including our pediatric eczema clinic with our partners in allergy. With our multidisciplinary Vascular Anomalies Team, I work with pediatric plastic surgery, interventional radiology, hematology/oncology, and genetics. Every physician wants to practice medicine in a collaborative environment that's focused on patient care. And I found it right here in my own backyard.

What I love about Henry Ford Health: I was fortunate to complete my dermatology residency at Henry Ford. I believe my training was exceptional and well-rounded. After completing my residency, I felt ready to tackle any situation. I have lived in the Metro Detroit area for the last 15 years. It has been amazing to see the Detroit community flourish economically as well as grow in diversity.
