Research in Cardiothoracic Surgery
Our division publishes 20-30 manuscripts each year and maintains an active research team, including NIH-funded investigators with a basic science laboratory and a substantial portfolio of clinical outcomes studies. Fellows can find a research fit whether their interests lean toward bench science, clinical outcomes, or health services research.
Our department funds dedicated research fellow positions, who work directly alongside clinical fellows on active projects, providing protected time and mentorship to move projects from question to publication. Fellows also contribute to cross-disciplinary projects with medical oncology, heart failure cardiology, and vascular surgery.
Our research program is also distinguished by its commitment to diversity and equity in clinical trials. Nationally, most trials enroll minority participants at rates around 5 percent; many of our trials achieve minority participation as high as 45 percent.
