Henry Kwon

I am Henry, a general surgery resident at Henry Ford. As a resident one of the ways that I unwind is going to play pickup hockey. During these games I get moments of clarity. These ice rink eureka's can be based on a research project, experiences during residency, or relating to a podcast, such as Freakonomics, that I enjoy listen to. Regardless, these thoughts often help solve a problem that I have been mulling over at work or with a personal project. One project I am interested in studying is the reduction of surgical complications and in turn, unnecessary hospitalization, and expense. One area I am actively studying are finding predictors of chronic pain requiring opioid consumption. I am currently studying this topic and others through in multiple systematic reviews and meta-analysis, which has given me a strong skill set in assessing the value of medical literature. Furthermore, I have an interest in improving access to education. I view education as a vital resource in helping someone develop and improve. In many cases access to education includes access to feedback and coaching. However, for those in marginalized and underprivileged communities this may be difficult to access. When volunteering with Save the Children I witnessed the value of mentorship for these children, helping to improve their self-confidence and begin building skills in self-sufficiency. Helping youth is something I would like to incorporate into my future career.
