Eligibility and Selection of Residents

  1. Resident Eligibility: Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to accredited residency programs:
    1. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
    2. Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
    3. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
      1. Have received a currently valid certificate from the ECFMG or
      2. Have full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction.
    4. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
  2. Resident Selection
    1. Henry Ford St. John Hospital will select resident physicians to its Graduate Medical Education Programs from eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities. Graduate Medical Education Programs will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or veteran status. Where and when possible in selecting from among qualified applicants, Ascension St. John Hospital will participate with an organized matching program such as the NRMP.
  3. USMLE Scores
    1. The optimal score for Step 1 and 2 is 210 or above.

Institutional oversight of the resident eligibility and selection process will be evidenced by the signature of the Director of Medical Education on the resident physician’s participation agreement. Annually, the Medical Education Department will meet with the Program Director and appropriate support staff to review eligibility and selection criteria for applicants to the residency training programs.
