Pathology Residency

Department Chairman: Daniel Snower, MD
Program Director: Nagla Salem, MD
Program Coordinator: Michelle Tofilovski

The Pathology residency program at Henry Ford St. John Hospital is an ACGME accredited, four-year program in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology.

Henry Ford St. John Hospital, affiliated with the Van Elslander Cancer Center, is a community-based hospital with 714 inpatient beds in a unique location between the cities of Detroit and Grosse Pointe. This allows the residents to serve patients of different populations, races, and social economic levels; therefore, they are exposed to pathology at different stages of the disease process.

Two residents are accepted each year, and the residency program is divided into 28 four-week blocks of Anatomical Pathology and 20 four-week blocks of Clinical Pathology with 3-to-4-week blocks of elective time.

Anatomical Pathology is comprised of rotations in Surgical Pathology (including GYN/Placenta and Hematopathology), Cytopathology and Forensic Pathology. Clinical Pathology is comprised of rotations in Chemistry (including Electrophoresis), Hematology, Microbiology, Transfusion Medicine, Molecular and Laboratory Management.

Our mission is to help our residents graduate as confident and competent pathologists that are capable of working in both community as well as academic and university settings.

We take great pride in the working environment that we have established and maintained for many years. Our goal is to help our residents focus on their work and learning journey in a well-structured and organized program.

Lectures/didactics are held daily by our faculty, who have expertise in a wide range of subspecialties in Pathology.

Pathology residents are expected to present Tumor Boards which include Breast, GYN, GI, GU, Hematopathology, Head & Neck, and Chest, as well as a general tumor board.

The residents are provided with direct supervision and immediate feedback due to the proximity of the gross lab to the attending offices and the residents' work room.

Exceptional fellowship placements are one of our strengths. Please refer to the Recent Graduates section for more information.

The research department at Henry Ford St. John Hospital encourages our residents to pursue their research projects, provide financial support for travel, printing posters, and presenting at different conferences.

Resources for the resident's wellness are provided by GME.
