Care for autism or intellectual and developmental disabilities doesn’t end when a child becomes an adult. Here you can learn about what the Henry Ford Health GROW Center has to offer you in this important journey.

Why choose Henry Ford Health for autism and IDD care?

At Henry Ford Health, we believe everyone should be able to receive the highest quality healthcare and become empowered to reach their greatest potential. People who have ASD or an IDD require specialized primary care – including preventive care, routine screenings and interventions – that are tailored to their developmental stage and health condition(s).

We pay special attention to adolescents and young adults, helping them learn about their health and how to navigate healthcare as they transition from childhood to adulthood. We work to promote their overall health, enhance their quality of life and support their journey toward greater independence.

Frequently asked questions about GROW appointments

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about appointments at the GROW Center for Autism and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities:

  • Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

Yes. You can bring a parent, caregiver, friend, or trusted person. If you want us to share health information with them, we will ask you to sign a simple consent form.

  • What if I get overwhelmed or need a break?

    That is completely okay.

    You can ask for:

    • a break
    • time to calm down
    • fewer people in the room
  • What if I communicate differently?

You can communicate in any way that works for you.

    We support:

    • AAC devices

    • “I prefer the lights dim.”
    • “I need the room quiet.”
    • “I like a step-by-step plan.”
    • “I do better with visuals.”

    • Your medication list
    • Your communication device (if you use one)
    • Comfort items (headphones, fidgets, toys)

    We can:

    • Send pictures of the clinic before your visit
    • Explain the visit step-by-step
