Hospital Expansion Progress
Construction at Destination: Grand continues to move full speed ahead! Two massive cranes, taller than the Empire State Building, are working in tandem to build the structure of the new 20-story patient tower. Check out his video for fun facts about the cranes.
Our crews have also begun construction of the Shared Services Building that will house the hospital’s lab, kitchen, pharmacy, and other support functions. The teams are pouring the concreate to create the building’s foundation.
This winter and into spring, construction will begin across the Boulevard on the north hospital campus to start building the bridge connecting the north and south campuses.
We are excited to complete the parking garage, opening in January, that will provide parking for the hundreds of tradespeople working on the construction site.
Road Closures and Detours around Destination: Grand
As work progresses on the Destination: Grand hospital construction on the south side of W. Grand Blvd., there are road closures and detours to be aware of — especially near the Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion.
Sterling Street is closed between W. Milwaukee Avenue and the alley north of Holden Street. This closure is expected to last through 2026.
The east lane of Cancer Center Drive is closed, to allow construction crews to safely install below ground utilities. During this time, Cancer Center Drive will become 1-way, entering via W. Milwaukee Avenue and exiting onto W. Grand Blvd. We encourage patients and visitors to follow the posted construction signage. This temporary lane closure is not expected to affect patient access to the Cancer Pavilion.
Travel Tips
Please allow extra travel time, follow posted detours, and use caution when driving or biking near active construction areas. Thank you for your patience and support as we build a healthier future together!
Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences Research Center Progress
Since beginning construction of the Henry Ford + MSU Research Center in May 2024, construction teams have made tremendous progress. Fully enclosed by the end of December 2025, reflections of areas surrounding the Research Center are taking center stage with the installation of exterior glass panels, known as curtain walls. More than 1,100 curtain wall panels, weighing on average 1,500-2,000 pounds per unit, make up the majority of the exterior materials.
In 2025, an average of more than 200 daily trade labor worked on site. Teams are beginning to work inside the center. When completed, the Research Center construction team will use nearly 73 million pounds of concrete and install 47 miles of plumbing and mechanical piping.
DTE’s neighborhood gas main renewal project continues near this project. This isn’t part of the research center construction, but it is taking place nearby, so Henry Ford Health visitors and neighbors should be on the lookout for intermittent lane closures in the area.
