Our struggle against kidney cancer continues. It’s a difficult, painful fight for so many patients and their families. We constantly work to bring the newest treatments and the latest technologies to Henry Ford. You can help us and future patients.

Craig Rogers, M.D. is director of renal surgery at Henry Ford Hospital and director of urologic oncology at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. He explains below how you can help us continue to lead and innovate in the field of kidney cancer treatment and research.

Our work against kidney cancer

The battle against kidney cancer is personal for me -- my mother battled this disease. Her example of service in our family and in her community helped teach me that one person can make a difference.

We pioneered the use of robotic surgery for kidney cancer, becoming the world’s most experienced center in this surgery. Hundreds of patients have undergone the robotic partial nephrectomy procedure, receiving the benefits of smaller incisions, less pain, and faster healing than traditional open surgery while avoiding the need to remove the entire kidney.

While we’ve made a great deal of progress, we still have more work to do.

Challenges and opportunities

Kidney cancer is a significant health problem, ranking as one of the top 10 causes of cancer-related deaths each year. Approximately 60,000 people are diagnosed with kidney cancer in the U.S. each year, and over 13,000 people will die of their disease. These numbers have been increasing each year.

We need better ways to detect kidney cancer and better medical treatments for advanced cancer. We need to raise awareness about the disease and the minimally-invasive treatments that are available.

• Help train world leaders in robotic kidney surgery
• Support research to help improve surgical outcomes
• Support presentations of research results at national meetings to help teach others
• Support basic science research to identify potential markers to help better diagnose kidney cancer
