General Medicine Subinternship
Duration: 4 weeks
Period offered: All
Distribution of student's time:
60% inpatient care
20% conferences/lectures
20% clinical/teaching rounds
Enrollment/Period: 6 maximum, upon availability
Prerequisites: Completion of core clerkships
Clerkship Objectives:
- Enhance knowledge and skills pertaining to interviewing, physical examination, or patient interactions, as well as interpretation of data, clinical judgment, and procedures (i.e., L.P., thoracentesis, paracentesis, arterial blood gas and central line).
- Increase student involvement in conferences, journal clubs.
- Increase student use/review of the medical literature.
Evaluation:
- Quality of care given
- The number of patients given care
- Level of knowledge
- Level of skills
Methods to be used in student evaluation:
- Observation of performance by faculty
- Observation of performance by house officers
- Assessment of write-ups/reports
Description:
The student acts as an intern with primary responsibility for patient care. The student is the first to evaluate patients admitted. The student’s work is then reviewed by senior staff. Frequent teaching rounds and conferences include rounds by the chief of service. Level of responsibility and intensity of teaching are designed to meet the requirements of the subinternship.
