Interested In Becoming A RYSE MED Program Student Mentor?
Applications are closed for the 2024-2025 RYSE MED Cohort. Please check back for details on next year's program in February 2025.
The RYSE MED program aims to support students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine and who face structural barriers to pursuing careers in healthcare and research. You can help by becoming a student mentor for our RYSE MED scholars!
2024 Student Mentor Responsibilities
Student mentors will start the program on June 3, 2024 to help with 8-10 hours of preparatory work. Once the summer immersion program starts, each student mentor will prepare for and facilitate one full day of program activities each week (approximately 12 hours per week).
Student mentor responsibilities include:
- Mentoring students who are earlier in their career path
- Facilitating youth participatory action research (YPAR), academic skills, leadership, advocacy, professionalism, and clinical lectures and workshops
- Coordinating and guiding discussions in mentoring circles
- Supporting high school scholars' health equity projects
Student mentors also benefit from other RYSE MED activities, such as shadowing, mentoring, clinical and research skills development, and more.
Student mentors will receive a $1,500 stipend for their work in the summer program. We have additional funding to support a limited number of full-time (40 hours per week) summer internships for undergraduate students interested in oncology careers or from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The full-time internship stipend will increase to $2,500 with some additional support for housing and travel costs. Please indicate your interest in this program option on the application.
In-person program activities will be held at Henry Ford Hospital (2799 W. Grand Blvd, Detroit MI 48202) and One Ford Place in Detroit.
