Neurology Residency FAQ's

1. How do I apply to your residency?
   All applications must be completed through ERAS.
2. Do I need to apply separately for a PGY 1 position?
   No. Beginning with residents matching to start July 2013, the Henry Ford Neurology Residency Program is Categorical.
3. I'm an osteopathic student, is the process different for me?
   Michigan, Oklahoma, and Florida no longer require DOs to have completed an AOA-approved internship. If they complete the Neurology program, since it’s recognized by the ACGME, they’re eligible to apply for AOA recognition and become eligible for AOA board certification. 
   
   Pennsylvania requires DOs to have complete an OGME-1 year to become licensed. However, they can use this Step-by-Step guide to obtain recognition: Recognition of PGY1 (Residency Year 1) - American Osteopathic Association

4. How do you select applicants to interview?
   The program director and associate program director review every application received through ERAS. Factors which favor the offering of an interview include good scores on USMLE Step 1, good COMLEX Step 1 scores, medical school attended, ability to communicate effectively on the application form, favorable letters of recommendation, prior research experience, MSPE (Dean's letter), and short time frame from completion of medical school. Except under extraordinary circumstances we do not interview candidates who graduated medical school more than 3 years prior to application.
5. Do you have preceptorships available in your department?
   Preceptorships are not available.
6. Do you have a travel fund for residents?
   Yes, we have a travel fund for every resident in the program. All residents may travel to a meeting of their choice during their PGY 3 or 4 year of training. Residents who present abstracts at national meetings are provided travel funds to attend the meeting, limited to one meeting per year.
7. Do you have a book fund for residents?
   Yes, there is a book fund every year of training.
8. Do residents cover more than one hospital when on call?
   Residents cover only Henry Ford Hospital on call. The on call resident will likely field calls from affiliated system emergency rooms, but will not physically travel to these sites.
9. Do you have a night float system?
   Yes, we have a night float system that operates from Sunday through Thursday evening.
10. Where do your residents go after graduation?
    The majority of our graduates enter clinical fellowships, which mirrors the national trend in neurology.
11. Do you support H-1b visas?
    As of 8/1/2012, we no longer support H-1b visas. We support J-1 Visas.
