Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery

Bunions can make every step painful. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Bunion surgery from Henry Ford can help you get relief with less downtime. We were the first program in Michigan offering minimally invasive bunion surgery. Surgeons remove bunions through tiny incisions so you can recover quickly and get back on your feet.

About minimally invasive bunion surgery

A bunion is a bony bump that develops in the big toe joint. It causes swelling and an abnormal curve in your big toe that can limit your activity level. Traditional open bunion surgery (bunionectomy) requires inches-long incisions and months of recovery.

Minimally invasive bunionectomy uses one-centimeter incisions (the size of a pea). Sophisticated instruments remove the bunion and realign your big toe. You can expect to start walking again, with less discomfort, shortly after surgery.

Minimally invasive bunion surgery at Henry Ford: Why choose us?

Henry Ford is one of the few programs in Michigan with orthopedic surgeons specializing in minimally invasive bunionectomy. Our specialists completed additional training in this procedure, so you can count on us for safe, effective treatment.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Personalized care: Our foot and ankle surgeons take time to get to know you and your health goals. We confirm whether the problem is a bunion and if you are eligible for a minimally invasive procedure. If you need surgery, there’s no rush. You schedule it at a time that’s good for your busy lifestyle.
  • Full range of treatments: We only recommend a bunionectomy if other therapies have not been successful. You may get relief from shoe inserts (orthotics), injections and more. Explore foot and ankle care.
  • Revision surgery: Occasionally, bunions come back after surgery. Our specialists are skilled in minimally invasive revisions surgery to remove them. You can expect the same high-quality care and quick recovery as your original procedure.

If minimally invasive bunion surgery is right for you, here’s what to expect:

  • You receive medication to put you to sleep.
  • Surgeons make two or three one-centimeter incisions near the bunion.
  • They pass a tiny camera through one of the incisions. This camera provides real-time imaging to guide the surgery.
  • A special low-speed drill cuts through abnormal bone structures. It does not damage nearby tissue.
  • Pins and screws help surgeons realign the big toe so it’s straight.
  • After surgery, you wake up with stitches or light bandaging on your foot.
  • You can go home within a few hours.

You’ll need a surgical boot in the days following surgery. Within approximately two weeks, you see the surgeon for a follow-up visit. Most patients wear regular shoes after this appointment. It may take a little longer to wear high heels comfortably.
